Summer study abroad in Morocco

We provide many opportunities for overseas study in the Arabic Flagship to improve your lingual and cultural fluency. The summer study abroad program takes you to Meknes, Morocco, to study at the Arab American Language Institute in Morocco (AALIM Center). During your time there you will be immersed in Arabic language and culture in an ancient city, one of four imperial cities of Morocco, and take classes at the AALIM Center.

This program is not required for students in the Flagship, but it is highly encouraged so you’re prepared for the Capstone year in Morocco.

I had a fantastic experience studying Arabic at AALIM this summer. The level of education and support that I received was unparalleled, and the staff at AALIM constantly went out of their way to ensure that each student felt cared for and supported, both emotionally and academically. I feel that these components of the program are what set the Flagship Overseas Program apart from many other study abroad programs.

Your summer in Meknes

Your journey begins when you meet your host family. You’ll stay with them for the duration of your summer studies in Meknes, along with one other student. At the AALIM Center, you will take fourth-year Standard Arabic, Media Arabic, and Moroccan Arabic with fellow language learners, as well as participate in extracurricular clubs, language partner sessions, and program trips.

Qualifications

To participate in the summer study abroad program, you will need to complete an application and a proficiency exam in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. The minimum scores needed to join are a 1+ in speaking, 1+ in another skill, and no lower than a 1 in the two remaining skills on the Interagency Language Roundtable Scale. Evaluations are also based on preparedness and cultural competency.

Scholarships

Students in the Arabic Flagship are eligible to receive up to $7,000 to cover programmatic costs.
